African Land Snails – An Update from the Tank!
We wanted to share a little update on our much-loved African Land Snails here at Halling Primary!
One of our original snails has just turned three years old, which is quite the milestone. You may remember that we first introduced our snails a few years ago, as gifted from the Trust – and we believe we might now be the only school in the Trust still caring for them!
Our largest snail, Turbo, is one of the original pair. Sadly, the other original snail, Sloth, passed away, as did Sid, who joined us later on. But the story didn’t end there…
As we’ve learned, African Land Snails can reproduce without a mate, and two years ago we were delighted (and a little surprised!) to discover over 70 baby snails in our tank. Many of our families adopted some of these snails, and we’ve heard that a few of them are still thriving at home!
Then, this September, we had another surprise – three more baby snails appeared in our tank!
Using pupil voice, our children helped to name them to match Turbo’s speedy theme.
We’re proud to introduce our newest snails: Flash, Bolt, and Sonic!
They’ve settled in beautifully, and the children continue to love observing and caring for them. It’s been a wonderful hands-on way to learn about life cycles, habitats, and responsibility.
